Boston, MA Street Photography

To me, Boston street photography will always be special.

It’s where I fell back in love with street photography after spending the better part of 2022 in a small town in North Carolina.

It’s where & how I met my partner– a photo walk by the Charles River.

Returning to Boston and the East Coast after spending Summer 2023 out west was a welcome change. I love the ocean and the laidback energy in California and the PNW, but after several months away, I couldn’t wait to get back to the city and return to my street photography roots.

An Experiment From Beacon Hill

There was a period at the beginning when I arrived in Boston where I had to shake off the rust a bit. As I mentioned, I’d been on the West Coast shooting waves and beaches and trees for months, and I almost had to re-embrace the confrontational vulnerability of street photography.

When I tried to jump back in, I was surprised at how uncomfortable and out of practice I felt. That’s how this set came about. Fortunately, with six weeks located in Dorchester, just a few minutes from the center of Boston by train, I had plenty of time to get back in the swing of things, and that’s how this session in Beacon Hill came about. It’s not a place a shoot often, but it’s photogenic, and on a day when I felt I couldn’t snap a decent street photo to save my life, I gave myself this project:

Haymarket

Haymarket is just a Friday/Saturday afternoon farmers market in the center of Boston…

But it’s also a street photography playground, and I strongly recommend you work it into your plans if you decide to visit.

Boston Street Photography 2022

This section serves as an archive of my older work from Boston. During my first visit to the city at the end of Summer 2022, I think I walked something like 20,000 steps a day and came back with thousands of photos. I was so overwhelmed by all the action after being a bit stifled by my surroundings during my stay in the southeast, and I couldn’t help myself as I snapped just about everything I saw.

These photographs are from a trip that reignited and cemented my passion for street photography.

The contrast between Boston and my home base at the time, along with the perspective I gained during a week of tirelessly exploring this New England metropolis helped me come to grips with what I wanted- both as a photographer and a human being. A special place to me that I’m beyond excited to have spent much, much more time in now.
